59 Chinese apps including TikTok, UC Browser, Likee banned, Central Government’s decision
Now you may also have a question in your mind that which are those 59 apps? Let us tell you that these Chinese apps banned by the government are not just from the entertainment category. These include chat apps, tool apps and even some games. At present, it is difficult to understand on what basis the government selected these apps.
According to the press release of the Ministry of Electronics and IT, the Ministry has banned these apps under the provisions of Section 69 of the IT Act and IT Rules 2008. This decision has been taken considering these apps as a threat to India’s sovereignty, unity, security and public order.
If we look at these 59 apps, it is clear that all of them are Chinese apps. Apart from TikTok, the list includes Shein which is an online fashion retail, ShareIt and ES File Explorer apps to transfer and manage files, social media apps like Helo and Likee and popular browser apps like UC Browser. All these apps have been banned.
What is also surprising is that some of these companies have also donated huge amounts to the PM Cares Fund to fight the Covid 19 pandemic. Take TikTok only. This company has donated Rs 30 crore. At the same time, Xiaomi has contributed Rs 10 crore, while two apps of this platform have been banned.
At present, it is not clear how this decision of the government will be implemented. Will these 59 apps be removed from Apple App Store and Google Play? What will happen to those users who already have these apps installed on their phones? Or these apps will be banned from server access.
TikTok has already been banned in India. After a decision of the High Court, it was removed from both the platforms. However, later the ban was lifted.
These days, the decision to ban these apps is being linked to the ongoing standoff between India and China on the Ladakh border. These days, anti-China sentiments are also on the rise. A company like Oppo had to cancel the launch event of one of its phones due to this reason.
But it is clear that after the ban on these popular Chinese apps, it is like getting the key to the treasury for selected Indian apps. Now take the Mitron and Chingari apps launched in response to TikTok. The popularity of these platforms is sure to increase rapidly.
