AI Scam taking New Turn, Scammers trying to extort ransom by impersonation Policemen
Kaveri, a user of social media platform Post I have given information about this incident that happened to me. He told that recently he was called from an unknown number. When she picked up the call, a person claiming to be a policeman said that her daughter was in danger. On this call, his daughter’s voice was also copied almost exactly and she was made to talk to him. This shows the use of AI in this scam. Kaveri said, “I had received a call from an unknown number. Usually, I don’t pick up calls from unknown numbers but I answered this call. A person on the other end said he was a policeman and asked me if “I know where my daughter is.”
This person told Kaveri that his daughter had been arrested because she, along with her three friends, had tried to blackmail an MLA’s son by making a video of him in an objectionable position. Kaveri soon realized that she was being scammed and started recording the call. After this he requested to talk to his daughter. Kaveri told that after this the person got angry. However, he played a recording in which a girl in the voice of his daughter was pleading to be saved. The fake policeman demanded money from them to release their daughter and hush up the matter. When Kaveri asked him to talk properly to his daughter, he got angry.
The fraudster told Kaveri that he was taking away her daughter. “I said he could take it and I started laughing. Then the man disconnected the call,” Kaveri said. Kaveri told that this was an attempt to cheat her daughter by imitating her voice using Artificial Intelligence. This post has caught the attention of many social media users and some users have given information about such incidents that happened to them in the comments.
