According to the American space agency NASA, an asteroid named 488453 (1994 XD) will reach near our Earth on June 12. Its size is approximately 1500 feet, which is the size of a bridge. 488453 (1994 XD) is included in the category of ‘potentially dangerous’ for the Earth. If such a big asteroid collides with the Earth, it can cause destruction on a large scale.

This asteroid has been coming close to the Earth for more than 100 years. In the year 1904, it passed through the Earth at a distance of only 25 lakh kilometers. In the year 2012 also it came close to the Earth. Once again (1994 XD) has forced scientists to monitor it.

Scientists will keep an eye on this asteroid until it goes far away from our planet. It belongs to the Apollo Group of Asteroids. Asteroids in this group are known as Earth-crossers. If an asteroid changes its direction and collides with the Earth, it can cause major devastation. Millions of years ago, the extinction of dinosaurs from our earth was also due to the destruction caused by an asteroid collision.

Asteroids are also called minor planets. Just as all the planets in our solar system revolve around the Sun, similarly asteroids also revolve around the Sun. Asteroids are rocky remnants left over from the early formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago. Scientists have so far detected 11 lakh 13 thousand 527 asteroids.
