At the same time, nowadays it has become a big problem for the youth, whose hair starts turning gray only after the age of 24-25 years. By observing the hair of mice, scientists discovered how stem cells are responsible for hair color.

For this, scientists studied the increasing age of these cells and found that in the stem cells, the pigment part responsible for the black color of hair changes with the increasing age of the mice. Melanocyte stem cells start leaving their work sooner than other stem cells, due to which the color of hair gradually starts turning white. The study says that this occurs equally in both rats and humans.

As hair grows, falls out, and then regrows with age, melanocyte stem cells become trapped in the hair follicle. Due to which the hair follicle becomes a bulge (clot of cells) after which it is unable to move around in the follicle and remains lying at one place. Due to this, these melanocytes are not able to develop completely. Since the hair stops getting black pigment, it starts coming out in gray colour. Study author Mumei Eto, who is also a professor at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, says this is a major achievement in understanding hair greying.
