DGCA advisory for indian airlines on airplanes GPS signals disappearing in Middle East sky
Incidents that came to light in September
At the end of September this year, the navigation systems of many commercial flights in the airspace around Iran were shut down. Due to this, there was a situation of ‘darkness’ in front of the flights i.e. they did not know where to go next. One plane even reached Iranian airspace without permission.
Opsgroup raised the issue
According to NDTV report, OpsGroup has taken up this matter. The group has been formed by many professional pilots. After the matter was brought to light by Opsgroup, the Government of India and DGCA have also become alert and have issued a circular.
What does DGCA’s circular say?
The DGCA circular said the aviation industry is grappling with uncertainties due to new threats and reports of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) jamming and spoofing.
What is spoofing?
Here you can consider spoofing as dodging. What happens is that planes flying from some areas of the Middle East receive fake GPS signals. This signal is so powerful that the aircraft’s system starts accepting it as correct. Because of this, many times the aircraft loses its navigation system.
In which areas spoofing is happening
NDTV reports that such incidents have been reported on a busy air route in northern Iraq and Azerbaijan. Several incidents have occurred near Erbil. Till the month of September, 12 incidents have come to light. Four days ago, on November 20, this also happened near Ankara, Turkey.
whose hand is behind this
Who is spoofing? For what reason he is doing this, it is not known yet. It is believed that in areas where there is regional tension i.e. war, jamming and spoofing is taking place due to the electronic systems of the army.
