A prototype of a commercial spacesuit was unveiled on Wednesday. This spacesuit has been designed by Axiom Space. If everything goes well and the spacesuit meets NASA’s expectations, then astronauts can wear it and land on the Moon.
Speaking on YouTube about the Next Generation Spacesuit, Axiom Space President and CEO Mike Suffredini said that we are carrying forward NASA’s legacy by designing an advanced spacesuit. He said that this spacesuit will enable astronauts to work safely on the Moon. What is also special is that the spacesuit being prepared will be able to deal with the challenges of the South Pole of the Moon. The engineers making the suit will be able to understand what changes may be needed in the suit for a long stay on the Moon.
NASA had given funds to Axiom Space for this work only last year. This spacesuit is being called Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (XEMU). It is claimed that after wearing it, astronauts will be able to work safely in the difficult environment of the Moon and carry forward research related missions.
Features of spacesuit
According to the information, Axiom’s spacesuit will have a white outer layer to reflect heat. Many features of the suit were hidden in the prototype shown on Wednesday. According to the plan so far, the US space agency can launch the Artemis-3 mission in the year 2025. Along with that mission, astronauts will be sent to the Moon, which will also include female astronauts.
