WhatsApp is introducing a new security feature for its iOS app. On Wednesday, the instant messaging platform revealed that it is introducing Passkey support for iPhone users in the latest version of its app. The Meta-owned platform first started working on this feature in January 2024, when it became available to beta users. After about three months, it is now being rolled out for iOS users globally. It is worth noting that the password-less login feature is already present in the WhatsApp app for Android.

one on x Post Making the announcement, WhatsApp revealed that iOS users will now be able to log in to their accounts using Face ID, Touch ID, and a passcode. Although the company has not provided information about the supported iOS version, but in an earlier report it was found that this feature is supported on iOS 17 and later versions. This means that users with iPhone XR models or newer models will be able to set a passkey for their account.

Passkey is an optional login system that provides better security than traditional methods like SMS codes. Designed by the FIDO Alliance and supported by tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, this method uses public key cryptography. With this, two sets of keys are created, one of them is stored on the cloud of the platform, while the other remains with the user. For iOS users, the user key will likely be stored on Apple’s Keychain system, which can be triggered using Face ID or Touch ID. The account will be authenticated if both the keys match.

How to set up WhatsApp passkey

Setting up a passkey for WhatsApp on iOS is quite easy. Users must first ensure that they are running the latest version of the app. If not, update the app first. After that, just follow the steps below.
