PAN Card is an important document in India. PAN card is required for filing income tax returns, opening a bank account and making payments above Rs 50,000. PAN card is issued to Indian citizens (even for those under 18 years of age), Indian citizens living abroad and foreign citizens. However, the process of online application is different for these three categories of citizens. If you are an Indian citizen and you want to apply for a new PAN card, then today we are going to tell you some steps with the help of which you can easily apply online.

Documents required to apply for PAN card online

Indian citizens need three types of documents. These include ID proof, residence certificate (
The document should not be older than three months) and Birth Certificate.

1) Documents for ID proof

  • Voter ID Card
  • Ration card (photo should be attached)
  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • Arms License
  • Aadhar card
  • Photo ID card issued by the Central Government or State Government
  • Pension card (photo should be attached)
  • Central Government Health Scheme Card or Ex-Servicemen Health Scheme Photo Card
  • Bank certificate or branch letterhead with your name and officer’s stamp. The certificate should have your photo and bank account number.

2) Documents for Residence Certificate (any one)

  • Electricity bill
  • Landline or broadband connection bill
  • water bill
  • Consumer gas connection card or gas pipeline bill
  • Bank account statement
  • Depository Account Statement
  • Credit Card Statement
  • Copy of post office passbook (your address should be mentioned)
  • Passport
  • Voter ID Card
  • Property Tax (Latest)
  • Driving License
  • Residence certificate issued by the government
  • Aadhar card
  • Property Registration Documents

3) Documents for Date of Birth

  • Birth certificate issued by municipal authority or other office.
  • Pension Payment Order
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Marriage Certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriages
  • Matriculation Examination Certificate
  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • Government issued residence certificate

PAN card application fee

Indian citizens have to pay an application fee of Rs 116 (plus an online application charge of around Rs 5). Foreign citizens have to pay Rs 1,020 (plus a charge of Rs 5).

How to apply for PAN card online

1) To apply for PAN card NSDL Or UTITSL Visit the website. Both the sites are authorized. Let us tell you the steps on how you can apply for a new PAN card from the NSDL site.

2) After clicking on the link given above, you will see the online PAN application at the top of the page. After this go to the application type, here click on New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A). If you are a foreign citizen then click on (Form 49AA).

3) After this, choose the category. Most people will choose the Individual option.

4) After this, enter the required personal information, such as name, date of birth, mobile number etc. After this, enter the captcha code and click on the submit button.

5) After this you have to choose how you want to submit the documents for PAN. For this you have 3 options, if you want you can authenticate through Aadhaar Card. You can submit the scanned picture through e-Sign or send the document.

6) We have chosen the process with Aadhar card. You will get an OTP, after which you have to make the payment.

7) Enter the required information like Aadhaar number (optional). Then click on Next.

8) After this, you have to enter name, date of birth, address etc. and then click on Next.

9) After this, click on Banana Skin which is AO code. It may look complicated to you but it is simple. After this, choose one of the Indian citizen, NRI, defense employee and government category options shown above.

10) After this, select AO Code, enter your state and region. Wait for a few seconds and then you will see the full list of AO codes. After this, scroll down and choose the category that suits you best. Here you will see many categories like companies, people with no income, government employees, private sector employees. If you are not sure which category you fall into, then contact a CA. Select the correct AO code and then click on Next.

11) Select the document for age and residence certificate. After entering the required information, click on the submit button.

12) After this the payment page will open, here you will see many payment options.

13) After payment, Aadhaar OTP will be asked for authentication or you can also submit the documents through E-sign. Apart from this, as we told you earlier, you can send a copy of the documents to NSDL. You will receive a mail from NSDL on your email, after the application is processed, the PAN card will be delivered to your address.
