This app is very simple. Reminds me of Instagram at first glance. Its interface is the easiest thing to understand. All you have to do is take a picture and apply the filter of your choice. If you want, share it on Twitter or Facebook. Its interface impressed us the most. Even though this app doesn’t have a lot of customization options for you, we were able to achieve some great outputs quickly and easily.
When you start the Prisma app, it asks for access to your Camera and Photos folders. You don’t need to grant access to the camera as you can also edit photos stored in the gallery. But there is no doubt that taking pictures from the camera and editing them directly saves time.
The interface is very simple. The top half contains the viewfinder which shows what you are photographing. A small thumbnail will appear in the lower right corner that will take you to the stored photo. If you want, you can edit the stored image. Once you select the photo to edit, you will get suggested filters along with the option to crop.
There are many types of filters in it. All are based on famous paintings. After applying the filter, you can swipe on the photos. By swiping left you can reduce the effect of the filter and by swiping right you can take it to 100 percent. After this you will get the option to store the photo or share it on a social network site.
According to Prisma’s website, the app uses neural networks and artificial intelligence to give a unique touch to photos. It’s not clear what this app does and how it is different from other similar Photoshop filters? But Prisma works well on most occasions.
For example, the Mondrian filter worked better than we expected. It managed to give a great look to architecture photos. Some filters are better than others. You’ll want to choose a filter where the artwork enhances the beauty of your photo. And you’ll want to choose the color carefully too. For example, the Mononoke filter completely disappears the color of most photos, meaning it will be useful in bright and outdoor scenes.
We also tried to see how these filters would work if we used them on real artwork. We took a half-drawn picture on the coloring book and applied different filters to it. Mondrian gave very poor results. The same can be said about Scream and many other filters. In the end we were satisfied with the Candy filter whose output was not too bad. Overall this app works best with photos of real things.
Apart from this, you should apply filters only on such pictures which have no lack of details. For example, in a close up shot of a Labrador, the effect on the teeth alone was good. The rest of the picture was just golden brown fur, nothing more. The line art filter with the name Heisenberg made this picture look very bad.
On the other hand, the app did a great job capturing the inside of Tipu Sultan’s summer palace.
The same can be said about pictures of homemade waffles. Many lines and bright colors gave the app a chance to do wonders. In this case, the output photos came out great.
We tested this app on iPad Pro. It can be run on iOS 8 or later, which means it will also work on iPhone 4S. It ran very smoothly on our iPad Pro. It managed to apply filters to any photo in a matter of seconds. If we also look at the reviews of the App Store, it seems that most of the users have no complaints with its performance. In this case, it should work properly on the device you use.
We really liked the Prisma app. This reminds us of Instagram at the time of its launch. We are currently unsure as to how many people will use it as consistently as Instagram. Using this app is fun. But you don’t want to use these filters on every photo you take.
