The purpose was to study the winds blowing on the earth. This satellite is equipped with only Doppler wind lidar, which helped scientists in forecasting the weather.

Something similar was planned for the Aeolus satellite, but at the last moment the mission team decided to abort it in a controlled manner. This step of ESA is a big message for other countries, especially China, that it should not abandon its satellites at the last moment. They should be eliminated in a controlled manner.

Aeolus satellite is slowly descending. It will be brought down to 120 kilometers, after which it will enter the Earth’s atmosphere. The ESA team hopes that the satellite will enter over the Atlantic Ocean. However, the exact location is not yet known.
