Air Pollution Can Add To The Risk And Severity Of Sleep Apnea Study Finds

Study In the International Journal Neurotoxicology Association published Has been done According to research, if a person is repeatedly and continuously exposed to too much air pollution, it can cause swelling or inflammation in the body. It also increases oxidative stress due to which the upper airway system of the body is not able to function properly during sleep. Researchers are suggesting that such pathophysiological changes contribute to the development and severity of respiratory problems.
Talking in the context of OSA, air pollution works to increase inflammation of the upper airways and cause disorders in the system. Therefore, due to this, the chances of the airways functioning properly while sleeping increases significantly. It is also worth noting that the effect of air pollutants depends on their type, exposure to them, and individual sensitivity.
For the study, experts conducted a systematic review and looked at 12 studies together. Then analyzed their data and tried to understand the relationship between air pollution and the risk and severity of OSA. Researchers found that air pollutants like NO2 etc. further increase the risk of OSA. NO2 belongs to a group of air pollutants which are gaseous elements. It is created by road traffic and the burning of fossil fuels. The study concludes that healthcare providers should also consider environmental factors regarding OSA risk.
