In the journal Frontiers in Medicine Publish Researchers believe these two skulls reveal the advanced surgical methods of ancient Egypt. This suggests that a person with a skull fracture may have survived. If so, it shows that Egyptian doctors were able to treat serious head injuries. Cut marks on skulls with cancer are more difficult to explain, but they may indicate that Egyptians were performing some type of surgery to remove tumors.
This research is important because it reveals new facts about the advancement of ancient Egyptian medicine. It shows that Egyptian doctors were not only able to diagnose and treat cancer, but they were also able to perform complex surgical procedures.
“We wanted to learn about the role of cancer in the past, how prevalent the disease was in ancient times and how ancient societies responded to this pathology,” said Tatiana Tondini, a researcher at the University of Tübingen and first author of the paper.
The researchers say that in one of these skulls, they found a large lesion that indicated abnormal growth of tissue. There were also several other smaller lesions around the skull that suggested it had metastasized. The team also observed knife marks around each of these lesions as if someone had deliberately tried to cut out these cancerous growths.
Newsweek’s AccordingThe skulls they examined are from the Duckworth Collection at the University of Cambridge. The first, dated between 2687 and 2345 BC, belonged to a man aged 30 to 35, while the second, dated between 663 and 343 BC, belonged to a woman over 50.
