Facebook Messenger may soon get auto status feature
TechCrunch’s one Report According to , this feature on Facebook Messenger will use your location, accelerometer and battery life to determine what you are doing and share it with other users you select. However instead of sharing exact coordinates, it will overlay an emoji on your profile icon to give information about the activity a person is engaged in. This feature has already been confirmed by Facebook’s EMEA communications manager Alexandru Voica. He had told that this feature is currently on internal testing and has not been released for testing.

The auto status feature was first seen on Instagram’s Threads app, which is an app of the Facebook-owned platform and is only for close friends. This app was launched in October 2019. The Auto Status feature on Instagram threads lets a user’s close friends know what they’re up to. This app gives users the option to share their location, weather, battery status, etc. status with their friends, even if they are not running the app. Auto Status is only visible to a specific list of friends and anyone can change it at any time, similar to the way Instagram’s Close Friends List option works.
A user can either choose an auto status or allow Instagram to use data signals to choose the emoji. Instagram will detect your exact location, like whether you are at home or in places like office, cafe, bar and will set your status accordingly. If you are riding a bike or driving, it is detected through your phone’s accelerometer and your status is set. Similarly, your phone’s battery may show that your battery is low or that you are currently charging your phone. After detecting all these, the app sets a small emoji on your profile.
