Government to Take Steps for Crackdown on deepfakes, Prime Minister Modi Recently Warned

In the last few weeks, cases of creating deepfakes due to misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) have increased. In this, fake videos of politicians and celebrities are made to harass them. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also warned about this. The central government has prepared to take steps to curb this problem.

Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar indicated on Tuesday that the government may take strict action regarding this. “You will have to wait till November 24 to see what we do. We will talk to the industry and come up with a holistic framework to strengthen the framework that already exists,” he said. Chandrashekhar said that the government will prepare a framework to ensure that deepfakes do not threaten the security of crores of internet users in the country. The government is in discussion with intermediaries to deal with this problem.

He said, “We are joining hands with all the platforms. I believe that the government and the platforms are partners in making the internet in the country open, secure, reliable and accountable. “Deepfakes are a huge and obvious threat to the use of misinformation, and we have already done a lot of hard work and put in place IT rules.” Last week, Prime Minister Modi had described the misuse of Artificial Intelligence in making deepfake videos as a big concern. Modi had told that he has asked the team of ChatGPT to identify deepfakes and issue a warning when such videos are circulated on the internet. He said that in the era of Artificial Intelligence, it is important that technology be used responsibly.

Modi also cited a deepfake video of him, in which he was shown performing Garba. He had told, “Recently I saw a video in which I am seen singing Garba song. There are many more such videos available on the internet.” He had asked the media to make people aware on this issue. The issue of deepfake videos has been in the headlines for the last few weeks. The deepfake video of popular actress Rashmika Mandanna has further aggravated this. This video was prepared by trimming it.
