IRCTC Tatkal Rail Ticket can be booked a day before the journey. Booking for 3AC and above classes starts at 10 am and booking for Sleeper Tatkal tickets starts at sharp 11 am. Apart from the counter, Tatkal tickets can also be booked online. You will often see long queues at railway reservation centers for IRCTC Tatkal Rail Ticket. In such a situation, online booking remains the only option for convenience. But booking Tatkal tickets online is no child’s play. On busy routes and during busy season, you have only a few minutes to book a ticket, to be honest, a few seconds.
How to book Tatkal Ticket quickly? We will tell you about it…
First of all you need to have an IRCTC account. You can create your account by visiting the website.
Create a master list
After this, create a master list. You can reach this option through My Profile. Move the mouse cursor to My Profile which is visible at the top. Here you will see the master list in the drop down. Click on it. The master list is actually a list of passengers which you can store in your profile in advance. On this page, you will have to store information like passenger’s name, age, gender, berth preference, food preference, senior citizen, ID card type and ID card number. After storing all this information, click on Add Passenger. In this way, all the information of that passenger will be stored in the master list of IRCTC portal. By the way, we would suggest you not to give berth preference. Because, getting the ticket is the most important thing for you. It is possible to arrange for the desired seat even during the journey. You can store the data of maximum 20 passengers in the master list.
Create a travel list
After creating the master list, we suggest you to create a travel list. This too will be available in the drop down of My Profile. This can be created only after creating the master list. Suppose a total of 6 people are going to travel. You can create a travel list for these passengers. Go to the travel list page. Here you will be asked for the name and details of the list. After this, you will get the option to select the names of passengers from the master list. Select the names of the passengers you want to add to that list. Our suggestion would be to name the list something that is indicative in itself. Our suggestion would be to complete the work of master list and travel list beforehand.

After clicking on the status, the ticket availability box will appear at the top of the page. Suppose you want Tatkal ticket in 3rd AC in Mumbai Rajdhani. You entered all the details by 9.58 and reached the ticket availability page. Here you will see the total number of available seats but the book now button will be active only at 10 o’clock. In such a situation, you do not need to log out from this page. You stay on this page. But the IRCTC server automatically logs out the page that is stagnant for a long time. In such a situation, there is no need to worry. There is a solution for this too, you can check the availability in different trains during this time. But keep in mind that you do not click too much on the page. Keep clicking at an interval of 20-25 seconds, but stop at exactly 9:59 and click between different classes of the train of your choice.
As soon as it is 10 o’clock, click again on the third AC class button of your preferred train. If the time has also passed 10 o’clock on the railway server, then the book now button will become active. Now click on the book now button.
How to use master list and travel list
On this page, the speed of your fingers will prove to be very effective and here the master list and travel list, which we had mentioned earlier, will come in handy. This is a page for sharing booking information. Suppose you have to travel with five people. If you enter information like name, age, gender, berth preference of each passenger, then the Tatkal ticket is yours. Master list is useful for completing this work quickly. You will see the button of Select from your master list on the border line of the box containing passenger details. After clicking on it, you will have the information of all those people whose names you had already stored in the master list. Here you can select the names of those passengers for whom the ticket is to be booked. In this way, the passenger details will be automatically filled in the IRCTC booking page in a few seconds. By the way, the method of selecting the names of passengers from the master list will prove to be effective for one or two passengers. But for 6 passengers, you choose the travel list. Select from travel list is also present next to Select from master list. After this, you select the travel list. And the names of all the passengers will automatically be filled in the box.
Keep these in mind to save time
Now you will also see boxes like auto upgrade, booking of confirmed tickets only, preferred coach ID, travel insurance and mobile number. You can enter the options of your choice in these. We would suggest you to select only travel insurance. To save time, avoid the rest of the hassle. Go straight to the bottom and enter the captcha code. During Tatkal booking, the captcha code is written in a slightly complex way. In such a situation, we would suggest you to read it carefully and then fill it. If the code is wrong, then your 10 seconds are wasted, which are more than enough for Tatkal booking. After sharing all this information, click on the Next button.
This is the last page of IRCTC before booking the ticket. Here, take a quick look at the date of travel, train and passenger details. Now it is time for payment. You will get options like debit card, net banking, credit card and Paytm. You can choose the payment method of your choice. However, we found net banking to be a much easier method. Because in this you have to share less information as compared to debit card or credit card which is time saving. And in Tatkal ticket booking, time is as good as money.
Important points: You will hardly be able to book a confirmed tatkal ticket on a busy route with an internet speed of 1 Mbps. Speeds above 4 Mbps are ideal. OTP during payment depends on your luck and the telecom network. Keep your phone nearby while booking tickets.
