How to protect your smartphone from getting hacked and keep your data safe

Most of us want to use our smartphones carefree. It would be great if there is no lock on it. Just open easily. But doing so is dangerous. Many thieves and hackers are looking for such devices so that they can steal financial and personal information of common people.

For example, having your email account hacked increases the risk of banking and other sensitive passwords being leaked.

You can avoid many diseases with simple cleanliness. Similarly, in this digital age, any major danger can be avoided with the help of ‘cyber hygiene’.

Lock your phone with a passcode
Now you don’t leave the door of your house open in your absence. Not using the passcode on the phone is also similar.

Using a four-digit passcode along with activating the self-destruct feature is a very secure method. In the Self Destruct feature, repeatedly entering the wrong passcode in your phone will completely disappear the phone’s data. Using a 6 digit passcode makes it 100 times more difficult to guess. It can be made more difficult by using letters and characters. This option is available on both Android and iPhone.

iPhone’s self-destruct feature can be activated by going to the Touch ID & Passcode section in user settings. If you enter the wrong passcode 10 times, the phone will automatically delete the entire data. Keep in mind that even if you forget the passcode or your child keeps punching the numbers by mistake while playing, the data will also be deleted. Android also has such a feature.

use encryption
The good thing about the iPhone is that it runs encryption by default. This means that the data stored on the phone cannot be removed. Or it cannot be read on another computer. Unless the phone is unblocked, the information taken from the phone is scattered and not readable.

In Android, you have to activate it by going to Settings. There is mention of providing encryption in Google’s policy. But only 2.3 Android devices are running in this version in the market.

Setup Device Finder
Find My iPhone isn’t just for finding your phone when you can’t find it.

If your device disappears for some reason, Lost Mode will be useful to you. By doing this your phone screen will be locked with the passcode.

This app comes with the iPhone, but you have to set it up before you lose your phone. You can find the Find iPhone app in the Extras folder. Due to activation lock, no thief will be able to sell your phone. For that the phone becomes unusable. It cannot be reactivated without knowing the Apple ID.

If all these solutions fail, you can also delete the phone’s data through your computer. However, doing so will cause all data to be lost.

There is no similar option in Android phones. But you can also use many third-party apps along with Google’s Android Device Manager app.

Back up your phone
If you are forced to delete your phone’s data from a remote system, then making a backup of your phone will prove to be a good habit. By doing this you will not lose photos or any important data.

Keep in mind that you will have to install Find My iPhone and Android Device Manager beforehand. You won’t be able to do anything after losing your phone.

always update software
Software updates always remove vulnerabilities that hackers can take advantage of to tamper with your device.

Apple updates are available continuously on iPhone. However, it is a bit tricky on Android systems. Google releases updates for mobile manufacturing companies. After this, these companies decide to deliver the updates to the users as per their convenience. But whenever you are asked about an update, definitely install it.
