Reuters quoted two government sources told It is reported that the Indian government has given permission to a total of 110 companies to import laptops, tablets and PCs. The government has prepared a management system under which the imports will be monitored. This new “import management system” has come into effect from Wednesday. Some of the big names among these companies are Dell, Xiaomi, IBM, ASUS, Lenovo, HP, Apple, Samsung and Acer.

India had withdrawn its previous plan to implement the licensing system after criticism from the industry and the US. Let us tell you that a few months ago the government had tightened the rules regarding import and almost banned it, but later created a management system and allowed companies to import.

Companies will have to register the quantity and value of imports on a portal with valid authorisation by September 2024.

The new import management system applies to personal computers, microcomputers, mainframe or large computers and data center machines. The reason behind the new system is to monitor shipments and establish trust in the supply chain while ensuring smooth supply to the market.
