India Boxes World’s Top Maker of Smartphones Selling in America, China Down on Third Place

Smartphones sold in America, including the world’s big markets, are Made in India. India has overtaken China as the biggest source of smartphones in America. The major reason for this is that Apple is to increase the assembling of its iPhones in India. India has been the biggest manufacturer for the first time of smartphones exported to America in the second quarter of this year.

This is followed by Vietnam’s second place. South Korea’s smartphone maker Samsung has a large manufacturing base in Vietnam. China’s stake in the US smartphone market has come down to about 25 percent in terms of shipments. It was more than 60 percent in the same period last year. Canalys report states that increasing the manufacturing of Apple in India is a major reason behind this change.

The volume of the Made in India devices in the US increased more than the triple in the previous quarter. “Apple had increased its inventory rapidly at the end of the first quarter and retained this level in the second quarter,” said Runar Bjorhovde, Senior Analyst of Canalys. Apple and some other smartphone makers have shifted some part of their manufacturing in China to India. Apart from this, Vietnam is also becoming a big smartphone manufacturer. The purpose of this strategy of smartphone companies is to avoid risks like tariffs and geopolitical stress.

However, American President Donald Trump is angry with this. Trump has asked smartphone makers to increase manufacturing in the US. Most manufacturing of Apple iPhones occurs in China and does not have any manufacturing plant in the US. After the pressure from Trump, Apple has promised to increase the hiring of workers in the US and invest about $ 500 billion in the next four years. The company’s largest contract manufacturer Foxconn has increased the assembling of iPhones in India. Recently Foxconn has also launched a new factory.
