India to Become Power in Semiconductor Industry, Government Approved 3 Semiconductor Units

The Central Government has given approval for three semiconductor units. The demand for semiconductors has increased rapidly in the last few years. Due to less number of companies manufacturing it, it is becoming difficult to meet the demand. Construction of three semiconductor units in the country will start soon.

Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “The Prime Minister has taken an important decision to set up semiconductor units in the country. The first unit will be from Tata Group and Powerchip-Taiwan. It will be set up in Dholera, Gujarat.” He said that there will be a total investment of Rs 1.26 lakh crore in these three units. Ashwini said, “It will manufacture 50,000 wafers. Its annual manufacturing will be 300 crore chips. The first semiconductor unit in the Northeast will be in Assam.” These units will provide approximately 20,000 technology jobs and approximately 60,000 indirect jobs.

Ashwini said, “With these units, an ecosystem for semiconductors will be established in the country. The country has strong capability in chip design. With these units, capability in chip fabrication will also be created.” Semiconductor Last year, the Central Government had announced incentives for manufacturing. American company Micron Technology also plans to start manufacturing of semiconductors in the country. Micron Technology is preparing to set up an advanced semiconductor assembly plant in Sanand, Gujarat. Tata Projects will construct this plant. This plant will be in 93 acres. Last year, Prime Minister Modi had announced to provide up to 50 percent financial assistance from the Central Government to those setting up semiconductor manufacturing units in the country.

Modi had said that his government has provided many facilities for the semiconductor industry. He said that there will be strong growth of semiconductor industry in the country. An ecosystem is being prepared for the semiconductor industry. He had told that 300 colleges have been identified to start courses on semiconductor design. Modi said that behind every industrial revolution in the world, there were people’s ambitions and he believes that India’s ambitions will be the reason for the fourth industrial revolution. Reliance Industries also plans to enter semiconductor manufacturing. For this, the company is in talks with foreign chipmakers regarding technology partnership. However, the company has not decided whether it wants to invest in this sector or not.
