Malicious Guerrilla Virus on Apps Available on Google Play Stores Can Steal Personal Information

Latest from cyber security research firm Trend Micro Report (via Ars TechnicaAccording to ), an investigation conducted by the firm on 50 different Android device models has revealed that 8.9 million (89 lakh) Android devices are infected with malicious software.
Another cyber security firm, Sophos were identified The application has been named Guerrilla. The firm closely examined the guerrilla app and found that it is included in the infrastructure of 15 different apps present in the Google Play Store. This is definitely worrying, because the virus can easily steal data from the device.
This virus pushes an “update notification” to the phone, which is actually just a way to get into that application. After this, it keeps downloading harmful software on the user’s phone in the name of updates. Downloaded software affects many parts of the phone including battery life and performance.
The report says that the advertisements that users receive on phones infected with the Guerrilla virus are often redundant and can be classified as pornographic content. The virus has currently most affected smartphones in America, Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand and Russia.
At present, the reports of both the firms have not mentioned the names of the mobile phone brands or applications in which guerrilla applications are present.
