NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has issued an alert today for Asteroid 2023 PD1. It is 95 feet i.e. around 100 feet in size. This piece of rock as big as an airplane is going to come close to the earth today. When it will be at its closest point to the Earth, the distance between the two will be 5,880,000 kilometers. That means it is going to come closer to the Earth by about 59 lakh kilometers. Whereas NASA says that the danger of asteroids to the Earth increases when it comes closer than 75 lakh kilometers.
Asteroid 2023 PD1 It is among those asteroids which have been said to be a potential threat to the Earth. Of the asteroids discovered so far, 20% are asteroids for which there is a possibility that they may collide with the Earth. The amount of destruction it can bring in case of collision with the Earth also depends to a large extent on the size of the asteroid. Asteroid 2023 PD1, as mentioned earlier, is an asteroid of approximately 100 feet, which is counted among the large asteroids. So if an asteroid of this size hits the Earth, it can cause huge damage to life and property.
The structure of asteroids is said to be similar to that of planets but they can be of various sizes. These keep revolving around the Sun in the form of rugged rocks. Some asteroids may be flat, while some may also be spherical. The largest asteroid is said to be Vesta, whose size is said to be 530 kilometers. You can imagine what kind of devastation such a heavy rock hitting the earth can bring.
