Noida Resident Duped of Rs 20 Lakh in Google Maps Hotel Rating Scam Reports Death Threats All Details

TOI’s Report According to , the victim Sandeep Kumar is a resident of Chi-1 sector of Greater Noida, who was scammed of Rs 20.54 lakh in January this year. He lodged a complaint with the police and said that the scammers had offered him a work-from-home job of rating hotels in Google Maps. Earlier this week, Sandeep Kuman lodged an FIR against an unknown accused at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Noida Sector 36 regarding this online scam that took place in January.
The report states that according to the police, Sandeep received a text on his WhatsApp number offering work from home, in which he had to rate hotels on Google Maps and in return he would get money. Kumar replied to this text, after which he was added to a Telegram group which already had around 100 members. It started with the work of giving ratings and later investment activities were also included in the group.
Kumar said, “I started rating hotels etc. Along with these tasks, there were also some investment tasks where I first invested Rs 50,000, but I could not withdraw the money from the website.” When Sandeep tried to withdraw the money, he was asked to pay an additional Rs 5 lakh as tax. In this way, he invested Rs 20,54,464.
According to the report, Kumar further told the police, “They (scammers) asked me to deposit Rs 5 lakh more as tax in my account, whereupon I came to know that I have become a victim of a scam. I have already embezzled Rs 54,464.”
The local police say an FIR has been lodged against the unidentified scammer “under sections 420 (cheating), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, and provisions of the Information Technology Act”.
The victim also alleged that he was receiving “death threats” from the scammers through telegrams and phone calls. In his statement, he told the police that “I am receiving death threats from these people on Telegram and also calls to defreeze the account.”
