Passenger Vehicle Sales Made Record in November, SUV Getting Strong Demand

Data from the Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers (SIAM) is indicating positive trends in the automotive industry. Last month, sales of two-wheelers increased by 31.3 percent to 16,23,399 units. However, this is slightly less than most sales in this segment. The SIAM report states that data has not been received from major automobile companies like Tata Motors, BMW, Mercedes and JLR and hence it is not included in the sales data. Last month, three-wheeler sales increased by 30.8 percent on a year-on-year basis. About 59,738 units have been sold in this segment.
The sales of the automobile sector also give a big indication about the country’s economy. Vinod Aggarwal, President, SIAM, said, “There has been a significant increase in sales during the festive season in the automobile industry. There has been some increase in the sales of passenger vehicles. There has been strong growth in the sales of two-wheelers and three-wheelers. Sales have been almost the same as last year. The industry expects the sales momentum to continue next year as well.”
Maruti Suzuki, one of the big automobile companies, had sales of around 1.34 lakh units last month. In the same month last year, the company’s sales were around 1.32 lakh units. For Maruti Suzuki, cars like Baleno, Swift and WagonR have contributed a lot to the sales. However, Brezza, Grand Vitara and Fronx have helped it achieve growth in the SUV segment. Maruti Suzuki’s sales in SUV and MPV segments increased to 49,016 units. This segment includes Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Jimny, S-Cross, Ertiga, Invicto and XL6. The company has increased focus on this segment. Maruti Suzuki has decided to increase the prices of its cars from January next year. However, the company did not say how much the prices would increase.
