Researchers Created FeverPhone App Turns Your Smartphone Into an Thermometer

Now there will be no need of a thermometer in case of fever. A team of researchers from Washington University has prepared an app named FeverPhone. It turns a smartphone into a thermometer without the help of any new hardware. A professor of Indian origin has also played an important role in preparing the app. The app uses the phone’s touchscreen to act as a thermometer and uses the battery temperature sensor to collect data.

Report According to, University Professor Shwetak Patel is the senior author of the research team’s paper. IANS has written that his team tested Feverfone on about 37 patients. It is claimed that the app measured body temperature with more accuracy than other thermometers.

This is the first app that can measure people’s fever with the help of existing phone sensors and screens. This study has been published in the journal Proceedings of the ACM. It says that more data needs to be collected before the app can be used widely, but such technology is really exciting.

This is how the app measured fever

The patients on whom the Feverfone app was used held the phone like a point-and-shoot camera. Patients placed the touchscreen on their forehead for 90 seconds. The Feverfone app reportedly estimated the patient’s body temperature with an average error of about 0.23 degrees Celsius.

Once widely used, this technology and apps can help people around the world. People will be able to check their fever sitting at home with the help of their smartphones. It will also be easier for doctors to understand how long the patient has been suffering from fever. There is no information yet about when the app will be used commercially.
