Rs 10000 fine at petrol pumps if vehicle owners found without PUC

Vehicular pollution is continuously increasing in India and has now become a serious problem. The government is making many efforts to control it. Along with efforts to enforce strict norms, adoption of electric vehicles as well as green fuels like CNG, LNG, biofuel, ethanol-blend and others are also being promoted. Recent reports have revealed that an automatic system is being developed in Pune to identify and fine vehicles without valid PUC (pollution control) certification.

A new automatic system is being installed in Pune which will identify vehicles without PUC. PUC certificates show that the vehicle is following the emission standards, thereby keeping the air clean. The certificates measure vehicle exhaust to measure pollutants such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons.

How will the system work?

In this system, automatic number plate recognition cameras will be installed at petrol pumps in Pune. These cameras will scan vehicle registration numbers, seamlessly cross-reference them with a central database to verify the PUC status of all vehicles. If the PUC certificate of a vehicle is found to be expired, drivers will receive an instant fine through SMS directly on their registered mobile phones.

However, there is a certain period of time to pay the challan which usually lasts for a day or two. This allows drivers to renew their PUC before being fined. The thing to note is that at present there is no information regarding when the authorities will start it. Officials say they are planning to implement it as soon as possible. Initially there is a plan to implement it in Pune and if it is successful then it can be implemented in other cities also.
