Scientists Find how Antarctica’s Doomsday Glacier Began Melting 84 years ago may cause catastrophic floods
Scientists’ concern about Doomsday Glacier has increased. Its size is as big as the Florida state of America. This glacier is said to have contributed 5 percent to the rising sea level around the world due to the melting of Antarctica. It is melting fast. Regarding this in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Study Has been published. The study says that this glacier started melting rapidly in 1940. At that time, due to a more powerful El Nino event, the speed of melting of its ice increased suddenly. Since then the glacier has continued to melt, and the ice that has melted is not being replenished.
The report says that due to global warming caused by human activities, it is now becoming difficult to compensate. It is called Doomsday Glacier because the risk of its sudden collapse is very high. The fear is that if it collapses suddenly, the water level will rise by 2 feet and there will be a threat of devastating floods across the world.
Scientists are saying that it is melting faster than previous estimates. Because of this, there will be a big change in sea water level every year. The International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration made an estimate in 2020 which said that the complete melting of this glacier would increase sea level by 4 percent. And if it collapses suddenly, the sea level will rise by 25 inches and the world will be hit by devastating floods! It is obvious that the dire consequences of global warming will begin to emerge in the coming years.
