Twitter vacates Asia headquarters to save expenses

Microblogging site Twitter is facing difficulties after billionaire Elon Musk took over the company. Twitter’s revenue has declined and Musk is taking measures to reduce the company’s expenses. After gaining control of Twitter, he laid off almost half of the company’s staff. Twitter has asked the staff of its headquarters in Singapore in Asia Pacific to vacate the building.

According to Bloomberg’s report, Twitter workers were told in an email sent on Wednesday that they would have to vacate the CapitaGreen building by the evening of the same day and from Thursday they would work as remote workers. Earlier, a large number of workers were laid off in Twitter’s Asia Pacific unit. The company had also recently removed the region’s integrity head, Nur Azhar Bin Ayob. Questions sent to Twitter regarding evacuation of office buildings in Singapore have not received any response. However, a spokesperson for CapitaLand, the owner of this building, said that Twitter is a tenant of this building.

Last month, Twitter was taken to court for not paying rent for its headquarters building in San Francisco, USA. Twitter owes $1,36,250 in rent. Columbia Reit, the owner of this office, had said that it had given notice to Twitter on December 16 that if the rent was not paid, it would default on its lease.

In the complaint filed in the court, Columbia Reit has claimed that Twitter has not followed the terms of the agreement. Twitter was also sued in December for refusing to pay for two charter flights. Earlier, Musk had to face strong opposition after banning the Twitter accounts of some journalists. Regarding this, the European Union (EU) had warned of imposing restrictions on Twitter. However, Musk later withdrew this decision. These journalists were banned for giving reports related to Musk. Musk is also the chief executive of electric car maker Tesla. Tesla’s value has declined by more than half since Musk made a bid for microblogging site Twitter in April.
