WhatsApp Passkey Support For iPhone iOS Released Heres How to Set It Up All Details

yaitoolbox@gmail.com1 year ago04 mins

WhatsApp is introducing a new security feature for its iOS app. On Wednesday, the instant messaging platform revealed that it is rolling out Passkey support for iPhone users in the latest version of its app. The Meta-owned platform first started working on the feature in January 2024, when it was made available to beta users. After almost three months, it is now being rolled out to iOS users globally. Notably, the password-less login feature is already present in the WhatsApp app for Android.

one on x Post In an announcement, WhatsApp revealed that iOS users will now be able to log in to their accounts using Face ID, Touch ID, and a passcode. While the company hasn’t revealed the supported iOS versions, an earlier report found that the feature is supported on iOS 17 and later. This means that users with iPhone XR models or newer will be able to set a passkey for their accounts.

Passkey is an alternative login system that offers better security than traditional methods like SMS codes. Designed by the FIDO Alliance and backed by tech giants like Apple, Google and Microsoft, this method uses public key cryptography. With this, two sets of keys are created, one of them is stored on the platform’s cloud, while the other remains with the user. For iOS users, the user key will likely be stored on Apple’s Keychain system, which can be triggered using Face ID or Touch ID. The account will be authenticated when both the keys match.
