Apple’s App Store in China has seen a major and surprising change, as Meta-owned WhatsApp and Threads have been removed from the store. The decision was taken by China’s top internet regulator, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), citing national security concerns. In response, Apple stressed its commitment to complying with local laws in the countries where it operates, even if there are disagreements.

China has been strict with foreign developers in the past, restricting access to various foreign apps and platforms without the use of a virtual private network (VPN). Despite this, savvy users often find other ways to access banned platforms via Apple’s App Store.

China is an important market for Apple, although issues such as censorship and national security have consistently challenged its operations there. The move to remove WhatsApp and Threads points to ongoing tensions between Beijing and Washington over technology.
