X Twitter Banned Over 3 Lakh Accounts in India Here’s Reason Behind It

yaitoolbox@gmail.com11 months ago03 mins

Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) has banned a large number of accounts in India. This is not the first time the platform has taken such a step. Earlier also, millions of accounts have been banned from X. One of the main reasons for banning the accounts is violation of X’s policies, as these accounts are allegedly involved in activities like promoting child abuse and non-consensual nudity.

TOI’s According,X has banned 3,33,036 accounts between October 26 and November 25. Newly appointed CEO Linda Yaccarino had banned 2,233 accounts at the time of writing this month. The reason behind the account bans was account policy violations related to promoting child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity. In addition, 2,233 accounts were banned for involvement in promoting terrorism in India, taking the total number of accounts banned during the reported period to 3,35,269.

The report says that this blanket ban is in line with X’s compliance with the new IT Rules 2021. Under these rules, major digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users are required to publish monthly compliance reports. In compliance with this, X released a monthly report revealing a total of 1,062 complaints from users in India during the specified time frame. Of these, 52 complaints were related to appealable account suspensions. The company lifted the ban on only 1 account after review, while the rest will remain suspended.

The report by X reportedly highlights that the majority of complaints from India focus on hateful conduct (556), followed by abuse/harassment (273), sensitive adult content (122) and impersonation (52). This wave of account bans is not the first such incident. For instance, between August 26 and September 25, 557,764 accounts were banned for promoting terrorism, while 1,675 were removed. In the following month, from September 26 to October 25, 234,584 accounts faced bans in India and 2,755 were removed for promoting terrorism.
